About Gold-Bar Livestock
Our History
In 1962, in the small town of Ariss on the outskirts of Guelph, Ontario, Joe Hasson Sr. started an Angus herd under the name Chickory Lane Farm. In 1975, Joe Hasson and son David joined forces to create Gold-Bar Livestock Ltd. In the early days, market steers were the focal point. Over the years there were numerous champion steers at the Canadian National Exhibition, Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and Canadian Western Agribition.
In 1975 the Angus herd was significantly reduced to facilitate the beginning of a Polled Hereford herd. In 1976, the last of the Angus herd was sold to a neighbour, Gerry Jansen of Castle Acres. The resultant calf crop produced Castle Acres Lass 402J. To the best of our knowledge she is still the only Angus female to be named Grand Champion Female at the National Western Stock Show in Denver that was Canadian bred, Canadian owned and Canadian exhibited.
Although Gold-Bar always owned an Angus or two, it was not until 1991 that Angus once again became the only breed at Gold-Bar. The herd was re-energized with the acquisition and breeding of Red Angus. The Red Angus herd achieved the status of Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor numerous times at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. At this show, the Red Angus and Black Angus were shown together. Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor banners were also won at Canadian Western Agribition where Gold-Bar remains one of the few exhibitors to have shown cattle at every single show since its inception. Red Gold-Bar Jackpot 103J and Red Gold-Bar King V415 107K were two noteworthy bulls, both winning many shows and setting sales records in the Masterpiece Sale at Agribition.
David and Angela Hasson had four daughters, Keri, Sarah, Suzanne and Dawn who were all active 4-H members and who all participated in the National Junior Beef Heifer Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. At its peak, the show had in excess of 400 exhibitors from across Canada.
In 2008 the Red Angus herd was dispersed and Joe and David Hasson passed the torch to Sarah Hasson and Brad Buchanan. Sarah now continues the Gold-Bar legacy with her two daughters, Kaycee and Saige and partner Paul DuSomme. The farm relocated to Caron, SK in November of 2016. In 2010, Gold-Bar won National Champion Female at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and were a Top Ten Finalist in the RBC Beef Supreme Challenge at CWA with Highgrove Miss Middlebrook 3U who happened to have twin heifer calves at side.
Kaycee and Saige are very active in the industry and proudly carry on the tradition of exhibiting Gold-Bar genetics at Junior Shows across Canada. Visitors are always welcome and Gold-Bar is very honored to host the Annual Masterpiece Sale held each October.
